Ideas and Inspiration for your custom "do it yourself" camper builds and travel
At Tiny Campers DIY Camper Builds, we're passionate about the outdoors and we want to share our love of building, camping and fishing with others. Our journey began when we realized there was a need for an affordable camper that a normal person can build. We started with a Honda Element camper base and moved to a Toyota Sienna. Then came the Ford Maverick Truck and soon we will be back in an Element.
Yes, you read that right. I spend more time thinking and testing out build ideas than I actually spend camping. My goal is to try out different ideas and hopefully inspire a few people along the way. I also like trying out new products and will show off some of my gear acquisitions.
Well, there is me, Pascal. Then there is my family which I tap into for inspiration. My kids are older now and don't want camp with me anymore, but I still build with the idea that they are still young and willing to hang out with dad (tears falling). So it is a one man operation, but I get plenty of feedback from the online community (sometimes not very nice feedback!).
I was inspired for this build during a trip to the Eastern Sierras when I met a young couple hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. They spoke of their desire to travel in a van and explore the world. So I designed this build with that concept in mind, but more for the weekend than a full time travel van.
This is my Ford Maverick Hybrid, 51. Named such because of her color name "Area 51." The bed is only 4.5ft long so it presented a sleeping challenge. Well, challenge accepted!
Easily convert your vehicle into a camper with no build options.
This is a very durable acoustic / electric guitar that I made from parts I had. You won't be afraid to play this by the campfire.

This is a relatively easy way to start camping in your truck. Convenient drawers to store gear and kitchen supplies. Setup is quick easy and cheap.
Hate tent camping? Want to get outdoors? Camping with your truck is really quick and easy. Just throw your gear in the back of the truck. But what about setting up and taking down a tent? Setting up camp? That all sucks. But with this quick setup, you can get out with little fuss.
Cooking is such a big part of the camping experience. It can be gourmet or gross, but a big part nonetheless.
Well... What can I say about this Jekyll and Hyde of a campsite. The spots are postage stamp size. But your are near the water. To one side is Interstate 5. To the other side is the Pacific Ocean. You have a view of the asphalt parking lot the call a "campsite." Then you have views of the sun setting over the cliffs. Tight spaces and loud freeway. But nice peaceful trails that lead to the beach. Flips a coin to decide if you want to go or not? Haha
It is free! No reservations. Dynamite sunsets. I really enjoyed this BLM camp spot, but keep in mind, it is dispersed camping. No toilet, no shower, no running water. You are far enough from I-10 that you will not hear it. Easy access and not too far from Orange County. Great golfing nearby and Joshua Tree national park in the back yard. If you like dispersed camping, I would recommend this spot.
Nice spot with designated spots for a small fee. No reservations taken. One of the few BLM managed campgrounds. It gets crowded during peak season, so don't expect to come Saturday noon and still get a site during the high demand months. Tuttle creek runs through the campgrounds and offer stocked trout. Nice spot with the Sierra Mountains as your backdrop.
Diaz Lake is located just off the 395 in the southern most part of the Eastern Sierras. I like this spot because I don't have to drive and extra hour to get to Bishop. Campsite gets crowded during the peak season but we went early season. We packed a lot of activities in this weekend. I will definitely come back again!
You bet. I think stealth camping is rather fun. Being somewhere nobody knows you are there. Save money on a quick night's sleep or spending the afternoon relaxing while waiting for....anything.
We camped at Diaz Lake again. Visited Lone Pine, Independence, and Trona Pinnacles.
Well sometimes I find myself camping where I am not supposed to. Like a city street on the low key. It is easier than you would think, if you are just there for one night.
Although I don't build for others I will respond to your questions and ideas. Drop me and email!
